What to Wear to a Senior-Level Job Interview

A job interview is partly decided before the conversation even starts. The outfit sets a first impression that even the best answers will spend several minutes either confirming or repairing. For a senior role, where the candidate will soon represent the company to clients or partners, that first impression carries even more weight.

Dress one level above the role, never below

The most reliable rule is to observe the company's actual dress code — not the one shown on its website — then position yourself one notch above it for the interview. A day-to-day smart casual environment doesn't prevent you from showing up in a suit without a tie for a decisive interview: you can always loosen your outfit once the job is secured, never tighten it after too casual a first impression.

Match the register to the industry

Finance, law and consulting still expect a full, dark suit with a tie for a senior role. In tech or creative industries, a suit without a tie, or a structured jacket over an open-collar shirt, is more than enough, and a full suit and tie can even look disconnected from the company culture. When in doubt, a navy or grey suit without a tie remains the safest compromise, whatever the industry.

The details that betray a lack of preparation

An experienced interviewer notices the details a candidate thinks are invisible: a jacket that hasn't been pressed in a while, a shirt collar that gapes, unpolished shoes. Each signal is minor on its own, but together they suggest a lack of rigour — exactly what a senior role cannot afford to project.

• A suit or jacket that fits well at the shoulder: it's what the eye notices first, even before colour.
• A pressed shirt with a collar that sits flat, with or without a tie depending on the industry.
• Polished leather shoes, never sneakers even in a casual environment for a decisive interview.
• Discreet accessories (watch, belt) rather than flashy ones — an interview is not the moment to stand out through an accessory.

A well-considered outfit never replaces a strong application, but it prevents an overlooked detail from needlessly undermining an otherwise solid candidacy.
